So what are the signs and symptoms of alcoholism or addiction?
The signs and symptoms of alcoholism and addictions can vary from person to person and they can also depend on the type of addiction you have. However, there are several signs and symptoms that are common to most addictions.
Psychological symptoms of alcoholism and addictions can be a combination or all of the following:
- Short temper
- Defensiveness
- Mood swings
- Tiredness
- Paranoia
- Agitation
- Difficulty in to focussing or concentration
- Lack of good judgement
- Memory issues
- Reduced self-esteem and self-worth
- Feelings of hopelessness
- Exacerbation of any existing mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression or stress
- Behavioural and social signs of addictions
- Secretive or sneaky behaviour
- Lack of responsibility
- Reluctance to socialise
- Poor performance and/or attendance at work or school
- Losing interest in activities, hobbies or events that were once considered important
- Neglecting friends, family or their social network
- Trying but failing to reduce or stop misusing a substance, or engaging in certain behaviours
- Continuing to use the substance, or engage in certain behaviours, despite the negative consequences caused by them
Physical symptoms of alcoholism and addictions:
- Lack of concern over physical appearance/personal hygiene
- Disrupted sleep patterns, including insomnia
- Skin greyness and unusual spots
- Looking unexplainably gaunt
- Wrinkles
- Dull or hazey eyes
- A distant expression
- Dilated pupils
